Timberland Regional Library’s Tax Measure To Fail – Future of Yelm Library Uncertain

While the final vote count won’t be released until Friday, the Library officials already have conceded defeat and have begun work on identifying key services in preparation for budget cuts next year. The cuts could involve reducing programs, services and library hours.

Thurston, Mason, Lewis, Grays Harbor and Pacific county voters were asked to agree to a increase in property tax, about 50 cents per $1000, to help the Timberland Regional Library. An embarassing 34.7% turn out was recorded and the Timberland Regional Library predicts a $2.5 million shortfall next year because its available revenue cannot cover increasing costs.

While the levy was not directly connected to Yelm’s Library issues, basically that the current lease is expiring and the Mayor and City Council have done so little to help find them a new appropriate location. Mayor Harding has already conceded to the fact that Yelm Library will move back to City Hall and stated “we may need to sacrifice some of the current library facility amenities.”

It is unfortunate so many agreed with Rick Taylor’s ignorant article posted on the Olympian’s website Wednesday Jan 28th or didn’t find the time or make it a priority to vote.
