Yelm Town Council Recieves 2006 Jefferson Muzzle Award

This dates back to 2006, but is one of the shining moments in Yelm Town Council history.
Since 1992, the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression has celebrated the birth and ideals of its namesake by calling attention to those who in the past year forgot or disregarded Mr. Jefferson’s admonition that freedom of speech ‘cannot be limited without being lost.’
Yelm takes 7th among such greats as GW Bush, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, and The U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
It’s the Council’s meeting. They can decide what they want to hear and what they’re tired of hearing.”
– Brent Dille, City Attorney for Yelm, Washington
According to its official website, the City of Yelm (Washington) has an elected Mayor-Council form of government whose powers “are to be utilized for the good of the community and its residents; to provide for the health, safety and general welfare of the citizenry. The City Council is the policy making and law making body of the City.” The website goes on to state: “The City Council’s collective policy and law-making powers are put into action at the Council meetings, with the opportunity provided for citizens to be heard.” Sadly, actions taken by the City Council demonstrate that its members do not feel themselves bound by the promises of their own website.
Congrats Yelm Town Council. Don’t think your hard work is going unnoticed.
